Suggestions for Screen capture dialog

Post by Dreamer » Tue Jul 24, 2007 4:48 pm

<Moderator's note: This topic has been split from another topic>

New suggestions for the Capture setup dialog:

- Open in xnview (as a standard option, not an alternative, if "Directory" option is selected, then the image will be saved and this option would open the saved image) *

- Exit after capture (to exit xnview after capture, "Multiple capture" should be disabled probably, otherwise this should be greyed out) **

* this would be useful, because the image would be saved automatically, so just an edit is needed, than Ctrl+S, Alt+F4 - and done. If not possible, perhaps at least the path from "Directory" in Capture dialog might be used, not "My Documents".

** useful to create just a single screenshot very quicky - with the Alt+F keys - F8 to run xnview, F9/10 to make a screenshot, then exit automatically (more in the previous post).

I like the above suggestion.

From my point of view...
... usage must be smart and simple (currently usage of screen capturing is not that simple).
... there's no need that XnView becomes a mature screen capturing tool, there are many good screenshot tools out there, already.
... screen capturing is not XnView's main domain. XnView should offer only *basic* screen capturing functionality which is needed often.

After capturing, XnView can either
a.) Open the captured screen
or
b.) Save the captured screen

But there is no c.) Save the captured screen and open it. Dreamer's option would allow for this.

I'll try to explain it more.

Current options:

(o) Open in xnview

( ) Directory [ . . . . . . . . . .]

I suggest this:

1. [ ] Save to this directory [ . . . . . . . . . .]

2. [x] Open in xnview

3. [ ] Exit after capture

If 1 and 2 would be enabled, then first save the image, then open in xnview. If only 1, save only, if only 2, open only.

If 3 would be enabled, then exit after the first capture automatically, perhaps if 3 and 2 (and 1) would be enabled, then exit after save, but I'm not sure if this is possible.

I'm not sure about the previous project, perhaps this is better:

After capture do this:

[ ] Save the image
[x] Open the image in Viewer
[ ] Open the image(s) Browser
[ ] Exit

Save directory [ . . . . . . . . . . ]
Format [ . . . . . . . . . . ]

Edit: Perhaps radio buttons should be used now, but then it wouldn't be possible to disable "open", so perhaps 3 radio buttons, but it's too much - or perhaps it might be automatic - open in viewer for one image, open in browser for multiple images, the other option might be greyed out, what do you think?

If "Multiple capture" is enabled, there are 3 possibilities:

- disable / grey-out "Open" and "Exit"

- disable / grey-out "Exit" and open all images/screenshots in own tabs

- disable / grey-out "Exit" and open all images/screenshots in the browser, similar to search results, then is might be possible to - open any image and edit it, or - very useful IMO - use batch convert for all images (Edit: I really like this one, I have added it above as another option)

Another advantage of this solution is that if you want to edit the image, you could, if not, you could just exit xnview, image would be already saved. I think this would be really useful, especially for multiple capture, you could choose which images to edit and which not - and batch convert (last alternative above) would be great IMO.

Edit2: Sorry Pierre, it's even more confusing now, but I(we)'ll try to find the best solution.
