Disable mouse navigation by default

Post by Dreamer » Thu Dec 02, 2004 3:55 pm

It's just for some people without mouse with wheel. I think mouse wheel is a standard today and if this option is enabled, users don't have many other very useful options in fullscreen:

(Edit)

- go to browser, with LMB double-click
- make a selection
- zoom, after make a selection
- move large images
- open the context menu
- lock zoom, crop, delete, rename image..., with the context menu
- go to first and last image, with the context menu
- exit xnview, show/hide informations, start/stop slide show (soon, I hope), with the context menu

- still go to previous and next image, with mouse wheel and with 6 hotkeys

I'm sure that many xnview users don't know about this !

So they can disable mouse navigation (and enable options above) like this:

Options > View > Fullscreen > and unmark 'Enable mouse navigation'

Switching images is still possible then, with mouse wheel.

Edit: Also 'Enable mouse navigation' option is not very accurate (because navigation with mouse wheel is still possible and many users don't turn it off then) - I suggest change to 'Enable mouse navigation with left and right button', but definetely it should be disabled by default.

Yes, right

Dreamer, thank you for explaining this. The functionality is really not that obvious.

The situation could be improved by a better English wording, e.g. 'Enable image navigation using the mouse' is clearer than 'Enable mouse navigation' (sounds as if you could no longer move the mouse when deactivating).

Also it could be made more obvious what happens when deactivating this option. Think a good way would be to use a different wording and radiobuttons instead of just a checkbox:

Mouse buttons in Full screen:
(o) Right button opens context menu
( ) Right button navigates to next image, Left button to previous image

Greetings,
Helmut

And what you think about this?

I could write pages and would still have no real strong pros & cons for the one or the other behaviour:

A - Navigation with left/right mouse button
In fullscreen mode you cannot do much apart from navigating, zooming and closing the fullscreen. With back/forth navigation the mouse is used in a good way. Though mouse wheel could be used for zoom in/out, currently it also navigates.

B - Context menu when using right mouse button
When opening the context menu when pressing the right mouse button, the left mouse button can no longer be used for navigating, it would not make sense. So it would have no

I think the default behaviour should remain the same, so A).

A good and more important thing would be to make the mouse handling of preview, image mode and fullscreen mode a bit more consistent. Currently all of these behave differently, at least for the preview and view mode this should not be the case. When setting the option and using the context menu in fullscreen, the mouse handling of all of them could be the same.

I disagree. More below...

If LMB and RMB are used for go to previous and next image, you can:

- go to previous and next image

If RMB is used for the context menu, you can: (all with just LBM and RMB!)

- go to browser, with LMB double-click
- make a selection
- zoom, after make a selection
- move large images
- open the context menu
- lock zoom, crop, delete, rename image..., with the context menu
- go to first and last image, with the context menu
- exit xnview, show/hide informations, start/stop slide show (soon, I hope), with the context menu

- still go to previous and next image, with mouse wheel and with 6! hotkeys

Another reasons for the context menu by default - comments of few other users:
PatrikZ (snapfiles) wrote:You can customize it to look and feel exactly as ACDSee, it supports file associations and plenty of full-screen features (unlike IrfanView). This is the best freeware. Keep up the good work folks! A tip for the developers: It would be great to have the right-click menu from the viewer available also in the full-screen mode, just like in ACDSee.
stooges (this forum) wrote:Wow XNView is really neat
some reqs:
... 6 - Right click on fullscreen viewer should bring the context menu, not send to previous pic ...
...it's your turn now

Personally I would like to use the mouse buttons to navigate to next and previous images although the Context Menu is obviously a good idea.

Therefore I tend to agree with Helmut having navigation as a default rather than the context menu. But as Helmut said there is no good way to say which should be the default option.

It is all up to Pierre to decide and I think he should pick the default option as the one he thinks is more useful to the majority of users. But how do you decide this? In the end it may still depend on personal taste!

Changed in 1.80, but I suggest also - use mouse wheel to switch images instead of zoom - by default, since zoom can be used with mouse wheel too (LMB+wheel and RMB+wheel).

Or maybe - use LMB+wheel (and RMB+wheel) to switch images if wheel is set to zoom.

What do you think?

If you disagree I could remove this topic, since the main "problem" is solved.
