Viewing DjVu Files

Help, I must be doing something silly.

I have Xnview 1.70.4 + plugins installed, but I am unable to view DjVu files. As an example, this link to the LizardTech web page can be viewed in the LizardTech 4.5 browser plugin.

But if I save this and try to open it with Xnview I get the message "Format of the file <LizardTechWST.djvu> cannot be determined".

Under Info->Plugin Information... I have the following plugin listed amongst others in the directory 'C:\Program Files\XnView\Plugins\'.

I can confirm this problem running XnView 1.74, also tried another djvu image getting the same results.

But I am pretty sure I have previously used XnView to view djvu images. Strange.

- I can confirm this too : XnView 1.74 “sees” the *.djvu files as not supported, while I've alright the Xdjvu.dll in the «Plugins» sub-dir.
? The Xdjvu.dll I've isn't very "fresh", it's more than one year old now (.v 1.65 rc2 - Oct. 8th - 2003).

Strange i can't view it with the standard plugin based on library from Lizartech, but if i take the Plugin from very old xnview, i have no problem.

the windjview is very fine.. so i recommend Pierre adopt the code .. and interface it as a single dll this would reduce future development..

I believe I stumbled on the solution to this. Go tools->options->read->DJVU and see if you have "view with maximal DPI" checked. If you do, uncheck it.
I had opened a DVJU file with it unchecked and it worked fine, I then tried checking that option just to see what difference it made, tried to reopen the same image that was currently open and got the error about format can't be determined. I tried another DJVU file and got the same results. I then unchecked the option and tried opening both files again, and they both worked fine.
(FYI This was with version 1.8.01

Hmm.. I just tried it with the image posted above, and it doesn't work for me either. I suspect that xnview's plugin is based on an older version of DJVU and that the problematic image was made with a newer version.
I've noticed another bug with the DJVU plugin, it can't handle multipage DJVUs properly, it doesn't seem to recognize them as multipage images. It'll show the first page, but you can't navigate to any other pages. This may also be related to the problem with the image posted above, since it is also a multipage image.

Here are some other images:
This is a single page that works well in xnview. It is one that works if you have the maximal DPI option checked but doesn't if you don't:

This image has 3 pages. The quality is extremely low in order to minimize filesize, the important factor of this image is that it has multiple pages. This image will show the first page in xnview, but won't allow you to see the other 2 pages:

On a related note, you're probably better off viewing a DJVU image with a dedicated viewer or browser plugin anyway. When viewing a DJVU image in most image viewers (including both xnview and irfan), it will be much larger than it should be. This is because image viewers zoom based on pixel dimensions, while dedicated viewers/browser plugins factor in the DPI to show it based on it's real-world dimensions.


On another related note, I did a test with a comic book scan. A zip file of JPGs was 5.04 megs. A single, multipage, DJVU file of the same comic was only 3.54 megs. Despite the size difference, there is only a minor drop in quality.

The “Next Page” button remains blurred…

http://allspark.net/cypherswipe/JPEG.jpg and http://allspark.net/cypherswipe/DJVU.jpg are just samples to show the quality comparison between the JPG and DJVU images. Additionally, putting JPGs within a ZIP file does nothing aside from collecting them into a single file. Archiving software/algorithms simply can't compress a JPG anymore than it already is.
