First-Start screen

Post by XnTriq »

I think XnView needs a “welcome screen” similar to this one: The dialog pops up when the program is started for the first time, asking the user to configure the most basic settings.

In XnView's case that should include the following options:
  • General » Operations
    • Display all image file types (f/k/a Use all formats available)
  • Interface » Interface
    • Language
  • System integration » Integration
    • Add 'Browse with XnView' to context menu
    • Add XnView to 'Send to' context menu
    • Associate Slide File with XnView
    • Add XnView as applications for USB events (camera, scan, ...)
    • Use XnView Shell Extension
    • Add XnView's Icon to Desktop
    • Add XnView to Programs Menu
    • Add XnView to Start Menu
    • Save options as INI in folder / in registry
    • Folder used for other files

Good idea !

:) Hello !

• That's indeed a very good idea that I support,
pretty useful for the fresh newbies and of course Aunty Agatha, their Queen !

• It's worth to draw a mock-up, maybe I'll do, if not too tired (my eyes, especially…).

- That reminds me that I suggested something in the same painting when installing TC - for the icons only,
because it's very important in that file manager, but alas unsuccessfully… For the fun :

• I'll see your list of needed¦indispensable settings, maybe with a few others in a second priority panel¦section,
let's say the skin to use (the look could be unpleasant for some users…), Keyb.¦Mouse and such thingies.

A very good suggestion, XnTriq. Currently, people have to do some manual steps to configure XnView properly, see topic How to configure XnView properly. My guess is that many people do not take these steps and miss some of the power and usabiltiy of XnView.

Therefore, it would be helpful if XnView showed some sort of configure screen at startup whenever started without any settings.

Excellent idea. :)

Maybe also having that dialog available for a "Quick Options" function would be nice, too.

Looks nice. :) But I think you should remove the Add XnView's Icon to Desktop option. It's already in the installer so repeating it is unnecessary. And I think that, those who like to use the zip packages, knows how to create desktop links by them self.

Yes, it's only for the zip package...

Good stuff and nice screen design. :-) When will we have this? ;-)

Perhaps the "Location for user's settings" could be re-labelled like this:

Code: Select all

-- Location for User's program settings ---
( ) Windows Registry (Multi-User system)
(o) Use .ini file in 'Document settings' (Multi-User system)
( ) Use .ini file in Application folder (Single-User system)
( ) Use .ini file in defined folder:

That's good. As written above, my guess is that this little dialog will help a lot of people and make XnView more usable for many of them.

Perhaps a note at the bottom of the dialog "All settings made here can be changed in the Options dialog at any time." might help users to understand and feel better.

I think the windows title "Setup" is a bit irritating, because with this dialog you do not setup (=install) XnView on the computer. In the dialog you make the initial settings for some options.

ATM, I have no suggestions for a good window title, so your suggestions are most welcome.
