Does the IPTC standard allow blank spaces?

Post by Gary Young »

Hi there!
I use iTag for writing IPTC and XMP keywords to my imagefiles. If I write more than one Keyword and separate them by a blank space (for example "Uncle Walter") it works fine so far. It's displayed correctly in XnView's IPTC-Tab in the preview pane as "Uncle Walter". But when I make changes in XnView's IPTC-Editor and save them to the file, "Uncle Walter" becomes split up into two Keywords "Uncle" and "Walter", displayed as "Uncle, Walter". In this regard it doesn't matter in which IPTC field I make a change. As soon as I save any change with XnView the Keywords split up.

Actually it doesn't make any difference, does it? But if the IPTC standard maybe doesn't allow blank spaces, I'd really like to know this. Or is it just the way XnView handles IPTC data?

Thanks so far...

EDIT:
I got to correct one thing. I just tried again and found out that it only happens when I'm editing the Keywords-field. When I e.g. make a change in the Category-field the Keywords-field remains untouched.

Okay, I discovered the following:

According to the IPTC article on the german Wikipedia-site this standard allows a maximum of 64 characters per keyword - including spaces as well!

So the splitting of keywords which include spaces seems to be a "misbehaviour" of XnView, right?

Could you send me a sample changed by iTag?
Pierre.
