Thumbnail cache management

Post by Bill Liedlich »

Hi.

I'm new to this forum and I'd like to say that I appreciate very much the suggestions and help that will be offered here. Thanks in advance.

I looked through the postings and FAQs and didn't find anything about my topic, so here goes.

I scan microfilm for OCLC Preservation Services. We handle hundreds of thousands of files a day. A folder from one reel of scanned film typically contains up to 2000 images of approx. 40 to 70 mb each, placed in one folder. The images are stored on a server as well as portable hard drives used for delivery to the client.

My question is about the thumbnail cache:

After allowing XnView to build a thumbnail cache, and the thumbnail cache file appears in the cached directories list, and that location is still available to the program, XnView doesn't always load the thumbnails instantly. Frequently, it seems to rebuild the thumbnail cache. This will take a few hours to be completed, typically.

Can you give me some advice about managing the caches so we don't have to wait more than one time for the thumbnail images to appear?

Ideally, the cache file would load instantly even when the folder of files is moved to another logical location or physical hard drive.

Thank you.

Bill

Hello,
I agree, the thumbnails cache efficiency is not very good in the Windows 1.93 version (the display speed is better in the XnViex-MP version).
I think than the thumbnails cache management must be improved (already requested here).
Maybe:
1-)The display speed can be improved
2-)We can display thumbnails hundred by hundred instead to wait for the full construction in large folders.
3-)An option to lock the cache for some specifics folders names can be added too.
4-)If the folder of files is moved to another logical location or physical hard drive then do not rebuild the cache.
