So happy Xnview happening for OSX... I have been recently switched from PC to MAC... need my familiar tools around me:-)
opening a jpg and trying to save it as a lower res jpg I can't even find jpg as an optionin Save As menu... am I totally missing something?
also - could not save crop... crop option in pulldown was grayed out.
Thanks for such a great application.

Save As drop-down no .jpg option?

On further investigation:
It looks like drop down menu selections correlate with file types from top of list down to IFF
There is no jpg choice
BUT
if you select Maya, you get IFF ext
If you select simage, you get jif ext
If you select JFIF you get jpg ext
I will go through the rest later to see if any other slips.
Thanks

Not sure about maya & simage, but jfif is the actual file format that most jpgs are. It's strange that they'd be listed by their container format instead of the file extension, but (for the jpg one at least) it is still accurate.
Jpeg is actually just a compression format & can be used in many different container formats. Jfif is the defacto standard (but not really official) container format for jpeg images. When they created the jpeg compression format, they didn't create a container format for it, they just planned on it being used in other containers (such as tiff). Some people decided to make a simple container & thus jfif was born. The newer spiff format is the "official" jpeg container format, but it's rarely used.
Some interesting history on the jpeg, jfif, and spiff formats: http://www.fileformat.info/format/spiff/egff.htm

Thanks for clarification re: jfif &jpg
On messing around a bit more, I did find that while viewing a single file I have one set of "save as" choices with no compression adjustments...
if, on the other hand, I select a single file while in browser mode, I can use the export button to export the file as one of 7 common file formats (including jpeg) and at that point I can adjust compression to limit file size.
I have not found a way to batch export yet...if I highlight several files, it only exports the first one.

What version are you using btw? I was just checking & I have jpg listed in the save-as dialog in view mode, just like in regular xnview (no settings though, those are only available in browser mode->export).
Also, you're able to crop?? I can't find any way in MP to crop or resize an image. The standard keyboard shortcuts have no effect & all the menu options are greyed out.

nope... I can define a box but not make it "stick" ...I guess crop and other image adjustments are not implemented yet.Drahken wrote:What version are you using btw? v0.12...yes in viewer mode the pull-down does not list jpg (only jfif) but the file ext if you pick jfif is jpg.
