I tried adding an orientation tag to some old kodak picture disk jpegs that have no existing EXIF data.
I used metaeditor because while I can change existing EXIF tags using XnView, I don't see how I can add EXIF tags to image files that don't have them.
The problem I have with using metaeditor to do this is that it doesn't seem to work correctly. XnView reads the added orientation tag as "Unknown(0)" even though I had set it to 1.
Any tips on how to best accomplish this without effecting the image data?

If you mean, "Did I try changing it in XnView after I added the tag using metaeditor?", then the answer is yes.
I did try to change the orientation tag setting with XnView after I added the tag to the file with metaeditor. It would not hold. XnView accepts the change than asks me to save the change. But it doesn't hold the change.
Here is the EXIF export text before I tried changing it in XnView:
D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\Pictures\IMG06A.JPG
[Camera]
Orientation : Unknown (0)

And here it is after I try changing it in XnView (ver 1.96):
D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\IMG06A.JPG
[Camera]
Orientation : Unknown (0)
