how to control which file types to browse
I want to skip .xcf files (gimp) in the browser. I can't seem to figure out how to exclude it. I see Options > Browser > File List, but that only seems to have general categories like images, audio, video. Is there a way to control specific file types to include or exclude?
Re: how to control which file types to browse

• This can be done alright in that File List Options page, please see the explanation HERE
at the bottom of the paragraph about the two lower fields…

Re: how to control which file types to browse
Thank you for your very helpful post. There was 2 key things that your web page helped me with:
1. In my Options > Browser > File List, it did not display the text for "Include" or "Exclude" under the "Custom Files". It was just blank (maybe a bug?) But your screen shots helped me understand it.
2. I also did not know that I needed to set Filter By > Custom. Your web page helped tremendously. Thanks again!

• These indications are indeed missing, it's that an annoying lacuna which can't be fixed by the user,…1. In my Options > Browser > File List, it did not display the text for "Include" or "Exclude" under the "Custom Files". It was just blank (maybe a bug?)
especially in English (because the embedded language, this has been reported ages ago…).
- Hence, we added them in the Manual, hoping that finally the Author'll think to fill in that lack

- Glad to hear that it was helpful !

Your discussion helped me very much. Thank You. Afterwards I came up with this image to help me remember. Maybe it will help other folks too.

I have TIFF JPEG and NEF (NEF= D40) files in many folders.
This allows a "live" display of TIFF only or the entire folder with an easy toggle of the Filter choice between Custom and Images.

The description from the website is gone.Clo wrote:• This can be done alright in that File List Options page, please see the explanation HERE

I'd like to exclude xcf files.
Re: how to control which file types to browse
Welcome to the forum, Espermachine.
Please add XCF to the exclusion list for Custom files (*) alongside HTM HTML MHT MHTML XML XHTML EML NWS URL in Tools » Options... » File List » File List…

… and make sure to set View » Filter By to Custom.
Clo's online help is still available on the Internet Archive.Espermachine wrote:The description from the website is gone.Clo wrote:• This can be done alright in that File List Options page, please see the explanation HERE

Thank you XnTriq !
I tried the webarchive trick before, but still got the french "Page introuvable".... maybe i chose a wrong day.
Your link works for me.
But the description on the archived page doesnt do the trick for me.
I added xcf and set the filter to custom, still xcf files are displayed.

You might post a screenshot of your settings and possibly someone may be able to see the problem...Espermachine wrote:I added xcf and set the filter to custom, still xcf files are displayed.

Re: how to control which file types to browse
Update:
i tried to exclude psd files as well and although i restarted XnView, they are still visible.
Do i need to restart the computer before the changes are applied ?

Re: how to control which file types to browse
I've just done a quick experiment as I'm not very familiar with this option, and it seems to me you place extensions you wish to exclude in the lower space, as below to exclude MHT files:Espermachine wrote:I tried to exclude psd files as well and although I restarted XnView, they are still visible.

I don't see that indicated anywhere in the window but presumably it is somewhere...

No need to restart, the setting takes effect immediately when the Options dialog is closed.

Re: how to control which file types to browse
Something's not right.
I put XCF in the upper space as you can see in my screenshot, and they are now filtered out.
At the same time i have AI, PS and PDF unchecked, still i could see the psd files. Or does PS not stand for Photoshop file ?
I tried putting psd in the space below and i can still see them....

Re: how to control which file types to browse
'PS' stands for Adobe PostScript, that's one thing that is sure...
Edit:
On further testing, only placing 'MHT' in the lower space hides the files for me, so something doesn't seem quite right??
