use photoshop.
XnView is a light viewer, not a free replacement for high powered editing.

PhotoShop is ofcourse the defacto standard for this kind of operations,
however XnView does have some nice sharpening features implemented,
(edge enhancement, sharpening, focus restoration, arbitrary matrix convolution), but I don't know
what algorithms are used behind these features, one of them might be good old "unsharp mask".
