Turned it off and now I can see the problem I had earlier isn't a problem at all.. its just been over ridden by this other option.. I suppose what would be nice if the user could choose the background colours per file format?
On the other hand, for those that are less patient and always ready to take a shortcut - if you can express a color as three values of R-G-B, find your "xnview.ini" and look up the values under the section [Browser]...
