rotated jpeg is displayed wrong on ipod touch

I have some photos that's been rotated a few times using various viewers. The last time was rotated with xnview.
They look correct in xnview and also in windows explorer icon view, but when sync into an ipod touch, the orientation is wrong (off by 90 degree). What is going on and how can this be fixed?

XnView recognizes rotate flags and thumbnails embedded in the file itself. Most programs are missing these features.
