Adding text to an image

Post by KrisR »

Hi, I am trying to add text to an image, but I don't seem to get it right. I do <shift>+T and get the add text box. I write some text in the text area, click OK, and left click on the image, but no text appears (If I change the text background to e.g. red, I get a tiny red rectangular spot on the image. But if this is the text I find no way to enlarge it).
What am I doing wrong? What is the proper procedure for adding text?

:) Hello !

• You must prior select an area where you wish to place the text on !
- Then, press Shift+T >> Set the font size according to the selected area >> Type your text >> [OK]
- The text appears on the screen, move it onto the chosen area with the mouse. >> Save the picture.
• It works perfectly here.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately your suggestion made no difference, so I have investigated further.
The problem, it seems, is that the text font is set in a fixed number of pixels, and not relative to the size of the image.
I am working with fairly high resolution images, e.g. 15-20 megapixel. My text was in fact added but the default font size was 10, which caused the text to be so small that I did not see it. If I zoomed in by a factor of perhaps 10, I could see the text.
But this has the unfortunate consequence that even if I increase the font size to 72, the letters will appear no larger than about 5mm if I print the picture on 15x10cm photo paper. So I have no way of inserting large character text on a high resolution image.
If I resize the picture to e.g. 1 megapixel, the text appears much larger.

I think this is an unfortunate situation for XnView, and I hope not intended.
I therefore request that font size should be displayed relative to the displayed size of an image, independent of the number of pixels in the image.

Right click a picture on your computer and click open with. Find xnview that you've downloaded. In the main toolbar click image and add text. Once the dialogue box opens type your text. Once you are finished typing you can make the necessary font size, font style, color, etc. Click okay and drag the text to wherever you want it. Not satisfied? Hit edit >undo............... left of the image tab.
