BUG: Inconsisent File Sorting bug.

Post by Gerrit »

Hi,
There really is a weird bug in the sorting method of XnView.

For example, having 2 files, Xnview sorts them like this :

WinMerge (16x16)2.ico
WinMerge (16x16).ico

So if you use an explorer which sorts correctly, doubleclicking WinMerge (16x16).ico will show the file in Xnview, however when you then click the "Show next image" shortcut, it skips over the WinMerge (16x16)2.ico file, because, for some reason Xnview thinks filename2.ext comes before filename.ext :?

The weird thing about it, is that it behaves correctly in another example, for instance, it correctly sorts these files :

Notepad2 (16x16).ico
Notepad2 (16x16)2.ico

Please, this is a serious misbehavior/bug, you didn't answer my 1st post about this misbehavior, I really hope you will take this problem seriously.

Which sort method do you use in browser?
You have an order different from browser filelist?

Hi Pierre,

Sort Order = Name (Numeric) + Ascending
xnview wrote:You have an order different from browser filelist?
The Xnview browser filelist sorts them incorrectly too, like i explained in top post.

Windows Explorer file browser sorts them as they should.

sorting JPG-files in browser-mode using Exif-date is also wrong,
I tested this in 197.2 on XP-sp3.
The filesorting on Exif-date works fine in the windows-explorer.

You have that in XnView:
WinMerge (16x16)2.ico
WinMerge (16x16).ico
??

If you have 2 files to test?

I am sorry, Xnview does seem to work OK, :(
for some reason my camera had the year set wrong in its menu,
so also in the Exif date for the last photo's.

Just does not make any sense whatsoever to me, too.

Might this be ...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319827/en

I'd be more inclined to call it InsaneSortOrder [tm], Microsoft calls it "is different ... than". Very funny of them indeed ... ... well ... NOT! :( (One of the 50000 settings nowhere in user interface that you have to painstakingly search for on the Internets ... Next stop after going to Windows XP from 2000 right now might be Nautilus on Linux ?? ... which amazingly ALSO has a DIFFERENT insane sort order and differentiates between lower and upper case AND you can't use e.g. "_" in front of a filename to get it before anything else ... Linux has really grown up in the last 10 years as well, they no longer care about what many people might be used to and thus usability, as well ... If you have to spend months searching for settings like these before getting fully productive again after "updating", that MUST be a "mature" operating system ... Sorry, rant over.)

Do you maybe mimic the InsaneSortOrder [tm] that was introduced with XP ?
I'd strongly suggest making this an option in XNVIEW settings ("Do you want INSANE file name sort order?" "No, thank you!" ;) ) or at least sync it with the setting in (HKCU or HKLM)\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

OS here also XP SP3.

Thanks!
