I also have been experiencing a very similar problem using slightly different settings but still the basic problem is the same. Yet there seems to be a way round the problem.

'Error': When selecting a folder in order to perform Batch Rename upon all images within and then selecting 'Batch Rename' either from the Tools menu or the right-click menu, it performs its actions exactly as expected, except a split-second after completing it crashes, producing the friendly "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" dialog box. Having had to perform Batch Rename individually on 49 folders, this problem only failed to occur three times.

'Non-error': However, when performing this task by entering the folder, selecting all images and then entering 'Batch Rename' (either from the Tools menu or the right-click menu), the problem no longer occurs. This was so for the remaining 18 folders for which I tried the procedure.

Similar to 'MyUserName' (inventive username by the way), 'Error' leaves nothing unexpected behind, and produces no noticeable damage to the images involved. I am using Windows 7, logged on as local Administrator, and using XnView version 1.97.4. I hope the information provided can help in fixing the problem.
