Categories, sub-categories, XMP and IPTC

Post by rbsoft »

I understood perfectly how to use XMP to store information categories in the pictures!
 1. Create your categories as normal, with the hierarchy you want.
 2. Under Tools, Settings, Metadata, enable "export categories to IPTC or XMP".
 3. In each picture or set of photos, select the categories in the information panel.
 4. The XnView will create XMP in the file, but not the IPTC (it's better that way because the IPTC gives problem with accented letters).
 5. Probably the XnView will not include XMP in the last subcategory of the hierarchy, but there is as correct.

For example:

Say you have the following categories:
 • Category A
 •
• Subcategory A1
 • Subcategory A2
 •
• Subcategory A2a
 • Subcategory A2b

Subcategory A3[/*]

Category B[/*]
When selecting A2b, XnView automatically select A2 and A. However, XMP will be:

dc
subject[] A
subject[] A2
lr
hierarchicalSubject[] A
hierarchicalSubject[] A|A2

So missing:

dc
subject[] A2b
lr
hierarchicalSubject[] A|A2|A2b

To correct it, re-select the category A2b with drop-down menu, clicking the right mouse button on the photos and selecting "category".

Thus, the XMP will be complete and may be read by other programs such as Shotwell or F-Spot (note: these two programs only read non-hierarchical categories, "dc".)! See:

dc
subject[] A
subject[] A2
subject[] A2b
lr
hierarchicalSubject[] A
hierarchicalSubject[] A|A2
hierarchicalSubject[] A|A2|A2b

Then I try to put images to make it easier to understand!

Bonjour roumano, (french)

Exact !

Salut Pierre,

J'étais justement entrain de tester cet outil et cherchais à comprendre ce qui se passait.
Une partie de problème pourrait résider dans un mauvais (incomplet) marquage "catégorie/sous-catégorie" au moment ou le choix est fait !

Hi,

It's much better with the 0.39 !!!

but a small thing remain :

If you create a new category (named "test" for exemple in hierachical "photographie" )

Then assign a picture to this category, in XMP field it will only save the "photographie" field. not the "test" cateogory.

To by-pass this problem we can create the new category then restart XnviewMP before assign category to the picture

To fix this missing XMP filed, we need to : restart XnviewMP then clicking the right mouse button on the photos and selecting "test" category. (this trick don't work if we don't restart XnviewMP)

..Would like to try that for Windows (that same grey/orange/black theme colors)
