xnview under scrotwm using dmenu_run

I just found xnview (version 0.39, using script mentioned at http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=18968 to create the *.deb file) and love it, but have run into one problem: I'm unable to start it except when using the console.

I'm running Debian testing. I use scrotwm (https://opensource.conformal.com/wiki/scrotwm) as my window manager, and dmenu_run as my menu. When trying to run xnviewmp I get nothing (can't find anything in any log). However, when I use the console to start xnview, no problems and it's *exactly* what I want! Please let me know what I might need to tweak to troubleshoot this, as I'm determined to use this from now on.
