Is XnViewMP's database ready to use?

I would like to know if it's unhesitatingly to tag/categorize and rate items in a productive way or if there could be changes on the database till the final version which possibly reset all the data (without converting or exporting options). So, is it future-proof to use the database?

Will there be some backup/exporting options for the database in the future? At moment it seems I only could backup the whole .db-file by copying it, but it would be faster and save more disk space to create database-backups without the thumbail images included.
