Thumbnail orientation doesn't match image

I'm viewing .tiff files, and all thumbnails come out as landscape while image comes out correctly as portrait. All files are portrait, and have EXIF data. I tried turning off embedded thumbnails, cleared cache, rebuilt thumbnails, as well as tried to convert lossless jpeg EXIF (which doesn't work because all these files are .tiff).

I get this somtimes too
usually the thumb is right and then due to a memory leak the img preview either rotates or is stuffed up
happens after previewing 50 large files or about 250 12MP files.
so definitely due to file size
