Need Help With Multiple Screen Captures

Post by ZBTSI »

Hi all. Merry Christmas!

XnView 1.996 small under Windows 7.

I need help with multiple screen captures.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to get successive screen captures from a video that's playing
in full-screen mode. I set XnView for multiple capture mode, and am using a Hotkey to trigger
the captures at periodic intervals. Since the video is running in full-screen mode, I can't really
watch for dialogs launched by XnView. I hit the Hotkey several times during the video, and
what I expected to see afterwards was a series of captures named Capture-1, Capture-2, etc.

That''s not the result I'm getting. After the video ends, I bail out of full-screen mode and
the result is multiple dialog windows, all referring to Capture-1, and prompting me to save
changes to that file name, until all of the dialog windows have finally been dismissed.
I've tried capturing in both desktop and active window option with identical results.

How do I do this properly in order to get a series of sequentially numbered captures?

Any insight appreciated.

Hi guys.

Just a follow-up to my post.

I tried everything I could think of to get this to work. Unfortunately, I failed. In addition
to the repetitive dialogs, XnView would crash on me when attempting to save the images
to files.

I needed to get this project done, so I bit the bullet and downloaded IrfanView 4.35. It
took a couple of minutes to set up, and I'm happy to report that it did exactly what
I needed it to do with no issues!

I'm not giving up on XnView, however. It's still my favorite image app.

Enjoy the holidays!

What program do you use to play the video(s), Thomas?

Strange, I rountinely use xnview for multiple video stills & never have a problem. I usually have the shots open in xnview & then save them manually, but I sometimes have them auto-save, and still don't have problems.

I think the problem might be that you are lacking a variable in your filenames. On the screencap dialog, in the field between "directory" and "format", you should have something like "capture_[mdY_HMS]", with the part in brackets being the variable (in this case, it uses a date/time variable, I don't know what the code would be for a straight numeric variable. Then again, while being long, filenames with time/date variables never duplicate. If you just used straight digits, you would run into problems the next time you tried to take some caps & the count started over). If you just have something like "capture_1", then it will always use "capture_1" as the filename, thus resulting in constant prompts like the ones you describe.
If you go & make sure you have capture_[mdY_HMS] as the filename, I think that will solve all your problems.
