XnView has a really interesting feature that I can hardly find on other softwares: it can display on one window all files from a folder AND all files in its subfolders. This is one of the major feature for me to see all my photos without need to open folders one-by-one...
Unfortunately, it seems that this function is not working when files are not stored locally. Here is my situation:
* 9 subfolders
* Total of photos
* Network disc (accessed by SMB or AFP)
The result is that it first starts to display the photos as expected, but after some seconds (5-10 seconds), it revert back to the previous view by folder. If I copy all the folders on a local disc, the issue doesn't appear any more. It seems then to be linked someway to the network disc... maybe some timeout too short for working from a network device ?

Re: View subfolder files not working
Hi didn't... so I just tried now and see that the result is the same... with the noticeable difference that it stayed much longer (20-30 seconds) on the "file" view and only then switches back to folder view (without any other interaction from the user side).
Cheers.
Cheers.

Re: View subfolder files not working
Our main archive is on a domain LAN. My workstation: Windows 7. The server with the photos has Windows 2003 R2 (or is it Win2008? - I don't remember now)
I choose quickly one of the smallest month folders which I found: 8.643 Files, 45 Folders of mostly Raw files making 247 GB.
It works.
Ok, it works slower than locally (obvious) but I'm not really sure that the speed of generating thumbs in 'Show all files (recursive)' is slower than showing just one folder.
Try it on another combination of OSes - for workstation and/or "network disc" (it will be ok to have as a temporary server an old computer, a laptop etc.) with the appropriate version of XnView.
Also, you can try another program (if you find) which does a recursive scan to see if it exhibits the same behavior.
Please report back the results.

Re: View subfolder files not working
...btw, at least on windows, when one does "show all files (recursive)" for the folder 'C:\foo' the program reports that he is still in the same folder but it shows all files from the subfolders.

Re: View subfolder files not working
Hi,
As I have all my files on network discs for 3 years, there are probably several programs I use that are doing folder scanning... and I didn't notice any issue.
You said it works on Windows... I then checked the protocol used for the disc. By default, I mount the disc using the AFP protocol (I prefer AFP because this allows me to keep some mac feature like the labels). I decided to test to mount in parallel the same disc with SMB protocol. I tried to switch the view in XnView to see all subfolder content.... and it works !!
Conclusion: the bug only appears on network disc mounted with the AFP protocol. SMB seems to work fine. This can be an XnView bug or a bug from some system service... but in general, I don't have any issue with using the network disc with AFP protocol... so if some developer has a disc that he can mount using AFP protocol, he should be able to reproduce the issue and understand what goes wrong... and if XnView is the cause, to fix it .
Best regards.

No, it seems that is not XnView:apaschou wrote:Hi,

Or, more generally, Google "afp timeout"
