Editing DDS[DXT3]

Can you just edit these files.
I have used Xnview to save the DDS file as a TGA, edit TGA with adobe photoshop, then used Xnview to save TGA as DDS but the new DDS file is all striped horribly wrong lol. I also note the DDS file is a DDS[DXT1] file not [DXT3].
I have downloaded Nconvert but it doesnt seem to install or anything.
So is it possible to edit a DDS[DXT3] file directly or do i have to convert it first.
Would be so much easier if i could simply edit DDS[DXT3] files.

Currently only DTX1 is possible, but what's the problem with it?

ahhh, found out i was saving the files wrong.
i got a plugin for photoshop which allows me to directly edit the DDS files.
They are now working good. Just need to sus out how to edit/modify alpha's.
