Is there a way to keep the "Show Files in Subfolders" option always on?

No.

...but perhaps as an option would be feasible.

I would love it if it was an option.

I understand that its probably set to 'off' to avoid memory issues, but maybe this choice can be placed into the user's hands? Once the icons have been created there should be no hit to memory or speed no matter the amount of directories being browsed... I use another app that has this feature and I use it without any problems whatsoever. I've actually become so accustomed to having all images within nested folders always appear when a top folder is selected and this behavior has become absolutely indispensable to my browsing habits, which is why I'm asking about it here - I find that its restrictive when I have to turn this feature on for each step I take when browsing within xnview.

Alternately, is there a 'hack' within the app that would turn this feature on by default?

Agree. :) - Support this.

Isn't quite like that. :)

Because all thumbs displayed are needed to be kept in memory (I will skip now why), the 32-bit version will exhaust the 2GB addressable memory space somewhere @ 9800 images in a single view. Result: crash. Yes, I tested. :)

But I think that this is rather a corner case. That's why I support your suggestion above.

...but mind you, think what will happen when Joe Clueless will click on C:\ and wait?... and wait... and wait... Besides that the program will crash appears also the psychological impression that the program is "slow" and/or "doesn't work". We must avoid that. That's why I think that this must be implemented through a checkbox disabled by default in Tools | Settings | Interface.

1. Which app?
2. Sorry, no hack. :) (AFAIK)

Yes, I totally agree with that, and clicking it would possibly bring up a confirmation dialogue with a bit of info about memory and why it would be a good idea to keep it off, but allow a confirmation to continue to placing the app in the "always display sub folders" mode... Regardless of how its done I would LOVE to see this become a mode of the app, as browsing to all sub-folders at once is a great way to find reference, and having to click the button for each folder is a big negative for me.

1. Phase1 MediaPro. Formerly iView MediaPro years ago, it was bought by Microsoft who in their usual manner did just about everything they could to kill it. It was picked up by Phase1 a few years ago, who though not putting much into it, have managed to make it stable again. This has been my default home/freelance image browser for years because I love the way it browses image directories and adds keywords. I don't think its robust enough to become a company-wide solution for multiple people though, which is why I'm looking into xnView, which has made some real tangible leaps the past while.

2. Dang.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to see if I can find a way to make a feature request about this point.

I would vote for a "Don't ask again" type of dialogue which will show up when 'Show Files in Subfolders' will bring more than, 3500 photos in pane. The dialogue will say something "You're about to display a big number of images which might impact the program performance and exhaust the memory available. Continue?" {Yes} {No}
Phase1 MediaPro
PhaseOne. :) Quite respectable company nowadays. I hope that they will buy Hasselblad (ok, what it is left from them - a very very sad story if you'd ask me...) and save what they can save from Hasselblind name. However, even if Phase One is one of - if not THE - most respectable name nowadays in Medium Format arena, I think that they doesn't see Media Pro as a key asset, which makes me kinda sad - they didn't update the program from 2012. Quite understandable if we think at the company profile.
Re: "Dang" + "I'm going to see if I can find a way to make a feature request about this point."
1. Monitor the XnView's Tracker at http://www.xnview.com/mantisbt/view_all ... e_number=1 (be sure to choose the XnView MP as project there) and if this thread isn't picked up there, then post a request on 'Suggestions' forum and/or send an email/PM to Pierre explaining him what's happening. But generally he's quite attentive to what's going on in forums.

2. Why do you want this feature? Perhaps because the card(s) are downloaded from your card reader in default directory structure, IOW in subfolder(s) named DCIM\100CANON, DCIM\101CANON, DCIM\102CANON... etc.? There are better solutions for this.

I'd agree with that too. So I have mixed feeling about the app... I spent a bit of time on the boards at Phase1 for MediaPro just after they released it feeling things out and based on the responses their tech people were giving to questions and bug reports I definitely got the sense that Phase1 had given it just enough attention to make it stable again and give it a new skin.

To those points its not understating the good that Phase1 did for the app because really MS really did about all they could to kill it, making it over several successive updates far less stable than it had been and eventually giving a rebrand & new name that was fit for only a hair salon - "Microsoft Expressions".
2. Why do you want this feature?
You mean the feature to have the 'view sub-folders' always on? This feature just lets me work, quickly, without being aware of my tool, because it allows me to skim through my image library quickly and efficiently in a very 'stream of consciousness' kind of way thats just not possible if I have to continually be reactivating my view finder settings. ...

I work in image creation, so a big part of my workflow is to bring images together - references and resources - from many sources and the more and the better reference I can find quickly the better chance I have of creating a good image.

Continually having to reactivate a feature thats become such an important part of my browsing style is very much a distraction and limitation... I honestly believe that if everyone who uses this app to browse and find reference images could experience that "always on" feature of image browsing they'd never ever go back. :-)
