How to stop XnView connecting to Internet with .url files ?

Post by Guest »

Is there a way to stop XnView connecting to the Internet when it encounters a .url file (eg. in XnView program folder) in thumbnail mode ?

It is strange. In thumbnail mode with a URL file, Xnview is shown listening on a local port using UDP.

MS Explorer (Win2k) does the same thing when it sees a URL file in thumbnail mode.

Good to hear. Why does XnView try to connect to the internet when browsing .url files?

And disabled (don't connect) by default.

Some users might think xnview is spyware...

To create a thumbnail
Hmm, by default this should be really disabled. People do not trust software which connects to internet, especially if it's not obvious why. HTML thumbnails are nice, but if you have folder with quarantined HTML pages and you browse that one with XnView all HTML files will be opened. :o

Not sure whether this is feasible, but it would be good if there was an option to allow HTML pages for local links but disallow all external links.

If I am correct it's not actually XnView what generates these thumbnails for url / html files, it's actually windows what creates them, so it's not probably possible to make such function. But only Pierre knows for sure.
XnView Tweak UI - Tool to customize your XnView beyond the regular XnView options.
UI-less Settings - Documentation of all the hidden settings in XnView.
XFAM - Tool to create and customize XnView file associations.

As others have mentioned, this is not only related to .url files. I had a .htm/.html file with corresponding folder containing images, css etc. While most of the links had been converted to offline links, XnView still tried to connect to the Internet when viewing the folder in thumbnail mode. I'm guessing this is because some links still pointed to a location on-line.

Anyway, my point is that this new option should also apply to .htm/.html files.

Thank you for the extra info. Any connection to the internet should be surpressed - even if this means that previewing HTML files has to be switchted off.
