The system tray (notification area) or the taskbar?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_tray

If you do mean the taskbar, you can add a program icon by dragging a shortcut on to it...

Judging by what Google outputs for "minimize any application to tray tool" request there should be a way, but, to be honest, I never tried any of them.

thanks for the link guys ,but it would be great if it has native support. I found that when using these tray programs, xnviewmp only goes to tray if it is already running and opened from the tray. If it's in the tray and you open it by going to a shortcut elsewhere, then program would open up again (like a new instance but it's not), with the icon in the tray still present. Now you can't minimize your opened program to tray. You have to go to the tray and click that icon, and then you can minimize it to tray again.

The solutions have weird properties like that and I'd prefer it if Xnviewmp has native support so it always go to the tray.

There is an option to limit XnViewMP to a single instance, if that's any help:

Tools > Options > General -- General -- One instance of program only

Otherwise, couldn't you always open the program from the program icon pinned to the Taskbar, rather than sometimes from a shortcut elsewhere?

Edit:

I'm slightly confused, as if the program is already open I would expect clicking on a shortcut 'elsewhere' would normally open a second instance, rather than the existing instance as you describe?

And to be clear, when you refer to the 'system tray' in Windows you are referring to the Taskbar to which program icons can be pinned, rather than to the small 'notification area' at the end for system icons such as volume level?

Yes I have one instance open only. I think my problem is more geared towards having to minimize to tray using a third-party program. Yes the tray area is the notification area where the volume/time are.

When I first open the program and then minimize, it would minimize to tray perfectly. When I want to maximize the program again, it works fine if I go to the notification area and maximize from the tray icon, and it would minimize again to tray perfectly.

The problem is when I maximize the program from start menu or another shortcut (with the program already minimized to tray area), the program would maximize, but the tray icon wouldn't disappear from the tray area, so it looks like there are two instances. If I minimize the opened program, it would only minimize to taskbar, with the tray icon still in the tray area. So it looks like I have two instances minimized, one to the taskbar and one to the tray. But when I maximize again from the tray icon, the tray icon disappears, and then if I minimize, and then returns to normal to being minimized to the tray area. Sorry it's a bit confusing.

If option "Minimize to tray" is nowhere to be found in XnViewMP settings, options and config files, then maybe it's not there. Having such ability needs redefining behavior of window title bar buttons or adding custom one in application code (example) like it is done in uTorrent, Download Master, voice communication software etc. If you need it but don't have it - why not to post in XnViewMP Suggestions subforum?
