The first one means that EXIF information is available in the picture, the second means the thumbnail has been auto-rotated according to the EXIF orientation info, and the third one means that the embedded EXIF thumbnail has been used to show the thumbnail.
Thanks for the quick reply. That makes sense since all of my images have the first and last icon. The rotation one confuses me though.
I have about 6 images that were taken with the camera at a 90% angle. Even though none of the thumbnails are rotated the preview pane shows them rotated properly....yet only one of the thumbnails has that rotate icon on it.
This leads to a few questions:
1. If the 1 has the rotation icon, how come the thumbnail isn't rotated.
2. How come the other 5 are rotated in the preview pane if they don't have the rotation icon on them in the thumbnail (so no exif orientation info?)?

Strange. Perhaps the Thumbnail and the real image are out of sync and have different orientation. So the thumbnail might actually be rotated, but is still not in correct orientation.

Perhaps you have rotated the images yourself (and reset the EXIF info)?
Just guessing with my answers. For all I know, there is no real standard regarding the EXIF auto rotation and the image / thumbnail orientation. Which camera do you use?
Perhaps you can upload 1-2 of your images on a server so that we can check these.

Sometimes, the thumbnail or picture is already rotated.
Thanks for the info guys. I'm using a Sony camera, DSC-S90.
I'm going to screw around with the orientation and exif info to see if I can figure this out. I at least want to get the thumbnail and image on the same page.

pqee,
I had the same problem - thumbnail not rotated but the image itself yes. I think an older version of XnView didn't properly update the thumbnail.
Anyways, you can check this for instance with Exifer.

Perhaps you could send me some samples?
I was going to send you a couple but I just found out my wife was messing around with the images and already rotated the vertical pictures. That explains why the thumbnails aren't rotated but the images themselves are.
Sorry about all of that, although I'm glad I still asked about the icons since it spawned an FAQ doc for them. Thanks helmut! (And everyone else in this thread).
