MP 0.82: XnView can't open a specific bmp file

Post by johndeer »

Hi, I can't open the attached bmp file with XnView MP or with Xnview (I have the last updates). Both x64 versions and I use Windows 10. Each time the software says that the picture can't be loaded.
The picture can be opened with Irfanview without any issue though.

The bitmap is invalid. Try opening the attached one.

This one works perfectly.
Is there any way to "correct" the other bmp file? (since I can open it with other image-viewers, even the default windows viewer)

Fixed version attached. I fixed it with "gpicview", an image viewer for linux that happens to be able to save images as well.

You might try enabling the following setting and then check if the original BMP file opens normally:

In the Viewer: File > Format settings... > Read tab -- Ignore read errors (bottom left)

I believe that setting is not enabled by default, often results in files not being abled to be opened, and is also rather hidden at present... :(

Thanks for your replies. I tried to enable the "ignore read errors" option but it didn't change anything :/
I guess I'll have to stick with other viewers for this file

FYI: XnView MP as well as Classic are able to create thumbnails of the malformed BMP.

Oh thank you, so the file was kinda corrupted after all. Is Xnview too "sensitive" in comparison to other viewers? (since you said the header of the file was corrupted)

Security considerations also play into this.

Hi, thank you :)
You're right I didn't think of such a thing but a corrupted picture could be something else. In this case I guess the file has been corrupted through the process: I used a script to take uncompressed bmp screenshots of a game instead of the crappy jpgs the game lets you normally take
