Background task thumbnailing

Post by jadO »

I'd like to see a real background task for thumbnailing. Currently you have to be in the folder and scrolling down depending on settings.
And when rebuliding via settings->catalog, it is a foreground process and blocking any other interaction.

This should be a process running in the background and should not block interaction.

You can use a trick and start two instances of xnview mp. The first one you use for generating thumbnails and the second one for viewing files or editing. That is better than waiting.
PC: Intel 8700k + Asus Z370-F + 16 GB RAM G.Skill + Asus RTX 3050 OC + Samsung SSD
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit 22H2 |
GFX: XnViewMP 1.8.7 | XN-View 2.52.0 | XnConvert 1.104.0 | Adobe Photoshop Elements 2024 | Elements XXL 11 | Paint.Net 5.1.7

I have already thought about that but then I have 2 instances eating up memory space.

Yes there should be some way that I can launch creating thumbnails for a specific folder and this goes into background mode so that I can switch to different folders and keep on working, while the background task keeps running.

I'd like to remind Pierre about John's ideas (2010)…
JohnFredC (Speed improvement: Lazy loading) wrote:It is very important that, where possible, lazy loading should distinguish between lazy "creation" and lazy "display". Display of cached thumbnails should always take precedence.

See my post about this topic here and please offer support if you agree.

In summary, there should be at least these settings:
  • [x] Display thumbs for whole folder (off = lazy)
[x] Create thumbs for whole folder (off = lazy)
    • [x] In background
Also a thumb daemon would be useful for heavily populated folder trees.
… which might even help to prevent MP from running out of memory.
