Rename "export" feature to "convert"

Post by WebDev12 »

The way to convert a single image from one format to another is to use the Export feature, which is in the File menu when an image is opened.

If you right-click on a thumbnail, you get a context menu that includes an option to convert the image into a different format. It's called Convert into.

The Export option should be called Convert – it's not obvious what Export means, and it's probably not what people think of when they want to convert a JPEG into a JPEG-XR, for example. Export and import are most commonly used to describe operations that export data from one application for consumption (import) by another application – for example, exporting one's e-mail Inbox from Thunderbird and importing it into Outlook.

Renaming it will also make it consistent with the Convert into and Batch convert options.

Currently in XnView MP there is:
- Convert into (context menu in browser mode)
- Export... (menu "File" in View mode)
- Batch convert... (menu "Tools" in browser mode)

In XnView Classic there is:
- Convert into
- Export...
- Batch processing...

These three functions offer some common basic function but are different:
- Convert into: Some format conversions, only.
- Export...: Some format conversion plus many format options including colour mode, lossy compression, and transparency.
- Batch processing...: All format conversion plus many format options plus image transformations.

I think that in XnView MP...
... "Batch convert" should be renamed to "Batch processing" because it does format conversion and image processing. (BTW: "XnConvert" is also much more than just a format converter)
... "Export..." shouldn't be renamed because it's a function known in graphic programs like Corel Draw, Gimp, and others.
..."Convert into..." shouldn't be renamed because it's a simple format conversion.
