Viewing OpenEXR Images

Post by Florian »

Hi,
I just read that XnView 1.80.3 should support the OpenEXR (.exr) Fileformat.
Fixed : OpenEXR use now gamma of 1
But somehow I can´t get it to work on several computers. If I try to open a OpenEXR file I get an error message saying that XnView can´t recognize the file format. Browsing a folder with OpenEXR files does not work either. I also tried OpenEXR files with the different available compression methods and even without any compression.

If needed I can supply some EXR Files and there are also some sample images available on the OpenEXR Website (www.openexr.net) which I could not open either.

Can someone verify this problem?

XnView Version: 1.80.3
Windows XP with SP2

Thanks, Florian

I figured it out. Apparently I did not download and install the Version with all plugins. Now it works.

Gamma 1. Why not 2.2???

So, is there a way to change xnview gamma setting for openexr images to 2.2? Thats what they suggest for photoshop in http://www.openexr.com/photoshop_plugin.html .

Gamma value 1 is just way too dark. I don't know what cgi people would use, but when you work towards film print from normal digital still camera images, 2.2 is the right value for most of windows workstations. (mac os x has gamma 1.8 )

Sorry if I´m bumping this but I just wanted to say that the plug-in that brings XnView EXR support is called "IlmImf.dll" since it´s not mentioned in the Readme for the plug-ins download. Maybe it should be included in the base package now since it´s getting more popular.
Thanks to Florian for finding the solution to my problem as well.
