What are the steps on how to import a categories list into XnView categories.
I know how to create them manually but it would be nice (easier) to use/know how to create/edit an external list.
Or is it just one of those things where you have to export your existing list first, as a way of saving?

Re: Import Categories List?
There are two objectives I was hoping for with the Import/Export feature,
1. To save/export a current cats list for backup (later import if needed).
2. To be able to work with building/editing a categories list outside of XnView, then importing/updating
back into XnView.
I thought I could do this when exporting to txt file > make edits > import back. It jumbled up/copied some entries when doing so.
That clearly does not work
Is there a way to do the above mentioned points?
I hear you on the Lightroom file thing, but I'm not sure exactly how you mean.
Can you create a Lightroom list file (with appropriate extension) without having/using Lightroom?

Re: Import Categories List?
It's only a text file like this
Code: Select all
Cat1
Child1
Child2
Cat2
Cat3
Child3

Re: Import Categories List?
That's what I did, or how I approached it. It jumbled/copied some entries when reimporting back in after
making a few additions/edits.
It seems that if you have a list already created and you import to txt > edit txt file > then, re-import without clearing
out the list that is still in XnView, it messes it up (you should try that as a test, if you don't already realize it).
I guess the only way it will work properly is to create the text file from scratch and import it in > then, when
I want to work on/edit it outside of program, I'll need to clear the cats out of XnView just before re-importing.
Really? I would have to do that every single time I wanted to work on it?

when you import categories, you would like to clear categories before?Xnout! wrote: Really? I would have to do that every single time I wanted to work on it?

No. But it seems that's what one would have to do to make it work properly, which would be terrible and a waste of time.
Did you test out what I was saying in previous post?

Re: Import Categories List?
Yes, sort of. Let me simplify. Here are the steps to take for testing.
as example,
1. Create 6 parent categories with 5 subcategories under two of them, in XnView.
2. Export that list to a TXT file. Afterwards, the XnView category list is "not" cleared.
3. Open the text file and delete one of the parents without subs > then, add 3 subcats to one of the subcategory lists.
4. Create a new parent category single and a new parent category with 3 subs.
5. Save TXT
6. Import that TXT list back into XnView.
7. Does the XnView list look correct now, according to what was done to the TXT file (not the way the XnView list looked previously)?
Or, if that is the kind of thing you already do, does it work for you? Or, do you use Lightroom files?
Are those also essentially just txt files?

Re: Import Categories List?
O.k., thank you, I can also reproduce the problem. Issue 1273 is fixed in next version.

Re: Import Categories List?
Thank You!!!
Me so happy now
I've pretty much halted production on XnView, trying to get this resolved (have an extensive categories system
I would like to implement).
I hope the new version is out fairly soon.
Thanks again
