Slide show gives black screen with Win98SE + XNVIEW 1.8

After having used a previous version of Xnview without problem under Win98SE on my desktop, I have moved to 1.8.01 and then 1.8.03. In the new versions I can never get a slide show to work as on the previous version. I can see the pictures on the whole screen when I click on a thumbnail but when preparing a slide show I get a black screen with the name of the first file name on top, when pressing a key as in a slideshow, the name of the files show up, but no picture. I installed the same program version on the laptop computer of my wife with WinXP - it works as normal. What could be the cause of my problem?
