IPTC/XMP Editor Question Number 2

In the "options" tab of the IPTC/XMP editor, there is a check-box "Keep Original Date/Time File Attributes" ; this box is unchecked by default.

What is the difference in having this box checked as opposed to being unchecked ?

The only Date/Time that I care anything about is "Date/Time Taken" and I DO NOT want my Date/Time Taken to be messed with; all the many other times mean absolutely nothing to me.
