Hello,
I use XnView mostly to manipulate scanned black-and-white documents (books etc). I often want to simply delete black lines and spots on the image (like the black strip between the left-hand and right-hand page when scanning from a book), but the Cut options always colours the area in black. Is there any way to make it white, except for the tidious procedure of Map --> Negative --> deleting --> Map --> Negative?
Many thanks in advance!

Currently, there isn't a (global) background colour which you could set somewhere.
A workaround that I have mentioned in Color instead of deleted part of the picture:
What you could do is mark a small area of this (or another image) which has the colour you want as background and copy it it to the clipboard. Then you select the area which you want to delete and paste the clipboard to the current selection ("Edit > Paste", or Ctrl+V).
