Missing Keywords in category Filter
Hello,
I am using XnView MP Ver 0.98 on W10.
in one of my folders after moving a large amount of images with keywords to it, I see the keywords in the list view for each image (see screenshot) but when I apply the category filter to a category none of the images appear. Also there are no keywords assigned in the category group (see screenshot).
What can I do?
Under Settings>Catalog>Catalog I already removed the folder and added it again!

Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
Hi,
Go to settings, metadata and check "import xmp ...iptc ... to categories"
Select one photo , and click "View, Update catalog from files"
If the result is ok for this photo, it means that the catalog needs to be updated with "import" options set in metadata settings
Tell us if this import option was already set ?
Maybe "adding folders" did not work for unknown reason ?
So select all files that need to be read, and click "update catalog from files"
Dont forget to set right options in "match" (Ubereinstimmungen) menu at the top of categories filter tab.

That doesn't work. Same result!michel038 wrote: Sun Dec 20, 2020 3:12 pm Hi,

I don't add a folder. The folder already existed!
Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
that is what i mean by adding...Under Settings>Catalog>Catalog I already removed the folder and added it again!
Sometimes, it doesn't work , so I select pkotos and click "update catalog from files"
Have you ticked "read hierarchical keywords"?
Maybe Pierre will find the reason why keywords ARE in your photos, and don't enter in the catalog

Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
as I have already written.I had moved several hundred images to another folder in xnview, after which the keywords were still in the images but no longer in the catalogue.xnview wrote: Tue Dec 22, 2020 7:34 amCould you send me some sample files where keywords are not imported?michel038 wrote: Mon Dec 21, 2020 6:56 pmthat is what i mean by adding...Under Settings>Catalog>Catalog I already removed the folder and added it again!

Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
My pictures are in subfolders.
When I open a subfolder, the number behind the individual categories is updated.
Is there a way to update all categories without opening all sub-folders individually?

Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
It's better to understand what are categories, what are iptc keywords and xmp keywords, and how XnViewMP can update these parts before trying some risky operations.
We should also understand why categories count is not right ... Maybe because keywords were not written by Xnviewmp's categories method ?
1) If we suppose that all your iptc or xmp keywords are right, and that you did not categorize photos with "tools, settings, metadata, export options" disabled, then you will be able to update catalog from keywords.
See Settings, Metadata , and tick the option "import xmp or iptc kw to catalog categories" and maybe some others options
Three ways now to update catalog, you can choose the one you feel it's the best for you ... :
- browse folders : that's the way you have found
or
- enable " View, View files in subfolders" and wait for browsing all photos . If keywords were added by other methods or another software, select all photos and click "View, Update catalog from files"
or
- Go to Settings, Catalog, and ensure that the folders diplayed are the ones you need. You can delete some of them, and add them again to force catalog update.
You can also "delete all" and add root folder of all photos here. It will take about 1 min for 2000 photos. But read again the first line of this answer and #2 below..
2) If some categories are not written in photos (because some formats like gif, png, svg ... does not support embedded keywords) you should first backup catalog. (copy xnview.db , or click "file's categories, export" in the small menu in categories tab)
Maybe, for some categorized jpg photos where keywords are missing, you'll have to click "View, update files from catalog"

Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
I will try this. But what is exactly the difference between keywords and categories?michel038 wrote: Wed Dec 23, 2020 9:38 pm It's better to understand what are categories, what are iptc keywords and xmp keywords, and how XnViewMP can update these parts before trying some risky operations.

Re: Missing Keywords in category Filter
My answer was for Tommes ... but we can go on working together
Short version
You can edit keywords without using categories, by using Edit iptc or xmp window.
You can categorize without writing keywords (settings, metadata, no export options)
Categories is a tool that helps to go faster for keywording and handles a database (catalog) for categories filter...
I think the best way is to always keep keywords and categories sychronized.
Not always easy, for example move or rename categories.
To rename a category, 1) display all files having this category (categ. filter) 2) select all files 3) unmatk category 4)unselect files. 5) rename category . 6)select all files. 7) mark new category. 8 ) unselect files. 9) select one file and see if new categoy is checked, and if keywords are correct inside .
Why all these steps ? because the only way for keywords to be written is to unselect file after a category is marked.
( Other method : Create new category, Select files, unmark old cat, mark new one, unselect )
This one is easier, but I have described the previous method only to show how the categories need precautions.
