Post by Dreamer »

- rename any non-image file to jpg
- in browser, double click that file
- error message is shown, that's correct
- press Enter
= new xnview is opened, why? a :bug: ?

:) Hi !

- I cannot confirm.
• I removed the nick of "Only one instance", because this is my usual setting.

• For each strike on "Enter" for the thumb-nail of the false JPG after the error-box is closed, I get the error message again, not any XnView started in addition…

- I renamed a simple TXT file.

Try with default settings (rename xnview.ini).

b2, deleted ini.

Here's another way:
Double click- external viewer opens.
Enter- the same.

So OK, no confirmation.

No, not any error dialog. Just external viewer opened, as expected.
Remember that I deleted INI beforehand. There are a few options with regard to file recognition/performing Open action.

I have the same erroneous behaviour and can confirm this.

When changing setting "Tools > Options > Browser > Open action > All other files" to "No action", the problem does not occur anymore. It looks as if XnView starts the chosen action for "All other files" after displaying the error message. This action must not be performed. :bug:

Default for Other is Open in associated application.

The whole thing does not work as expected for me though.

As Recognize only by extension is set, XnView should recognize renamed file as JPEG and try to display it, showing error.

For me error is not shown, just external viewer is opened, that should not happen because file should be recognized as image.

Oh, no, wait a second. Pierre told me that 'Recognize only be extension' has actually no effect in Thumbnail mode, because when creating thumbnails, header info is always used.
So I guess my behaviour is OK after all.
XnView recognizes file as Other, because header does not indicate JPEG. Default action for Other is Open in associated application. Because associations work with extensions, XnView runs system application for JPEG.
So everything is OK.

Recognize extension is only used by browser for thumbnail creation

A see a problem here. We've had a whole conversation (http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=4200) about the problem and seemingly I still do not understand. Either I am stupid or ...

If 'Recognize only by extension' refers to thumbnails creation, why, in first place IT IS NOT IN Browser>Thumbnail????????
You wrote also that, for all purpose, on thumbnail creation headers are always scanned, regardless of this setting. And so on, and so on. You seem to be lost in the options yourself...

Frankly speaking, the more I learn XnView the more I understand people who have chosen IrfanView or whatever else there is. And the more I am inclined to follow their steps. Half of the XnView options has bad names, are placed in wrong places and nobody, including the author, seem to know what they really do.

XnView needs some user experience improvements BADLY.

Some options are really problematic. Or have become problematic since XnView has changed from a MDI application to a more or less non-MDI application with tabs.

I think you have to distinguish user-interface and options. Generally, XnView's user interface is pretty good and few graphic viewers can compete with. The problem is the high-powered engine and it's 1000 ways for fine-tuning. And in some cases the fine-tuning is really an expert thing, which shouldn't be the case.

Xyzzy, in your topic Options' descriptions you have shed a lot of light on the options, already. I understand that you find discussions like the above a bit frustrating. My guess is that one reason for the misunderstandings are Pierre's short answers which are sometime incomplete.

There are still many things to improve, but XnView is a fast and good graphic viewer. And with the options we are on the right track.
