XnView can only open cdr files with thumbnail
A bit more precise: XnView can only read and display the thumbnail preview embedded in the CDR file. The thumbnail is embedded by Corel Draw or Corel Photopaint, respectively, when saving the image. The thumbnail is optional, if it's not embedded you won't be able to see anything in XnView browser or image view. Quality of embedded thumbnail is comparatively low, sufficient for browsing but for viewing it's no good.
There's little XnView can do about it because CDR format is a proprietary vector format of Corel.

:) Hello !

- The old *.cdr 4-BPP from the antiquated Corel 3.0 16-bit ARE opened in “View”.

- Some others from a bit newer versions (8-BPP) work too. I have a small set of such samples (in addition of the original Corel 3.0 4-BPP ones) given by some user(s) here.

- Certainly, the *.cdr which can't be displayed as "View" come from the newest Corel-versions…

 Kind regards,
Claude
