Inside Settings > Browser > Metadata > IPTC & XMP.



Problem #1

Option Export Catalog's Category to XMP Subject and IPTC Keyword including two sub options Create XMP data and Create IPTC data is completely ignored and category is always exported to both XMP Subject and IPTC Keyword regardless of its being checked or unchecked.


Problem #2

Option Read hierarchical keywords from images as categories does not work, keywords always load hierarchically.

Perhaps to be more clear this option should be called "Read hierarchical keywords from images as hierarchical categories"


Problem #3

Option Write categories into images as hierachical keywords also does nothing, always write hierarchical.

There's typo in word "hierarchical"


Problem #4

Options Export rating in XMP metadata and Export color label in XMP metadata have no effect rating and color are always exported.


Problem #5

Option Write comment in XMP (dc:description and exif:UserComment) have no effect.

Perhaps because comments are not implemented yet.



Comments from Ctrl+D dialog box don't save in database, there's only option to write them in the file, and they don't get written to .XMP sidecar from there either when used with RAW files.

P.S. All above was tested on .ARW file and can be seen inside .XMP sidecar.

could you describe what do you use to reproduce these problems?

Why?? tag visibility has nothing to do with catalog

I was testing Metadata > Edit IPTC dialog on this RAW file https://www.upload.ee/files/15772839/_DSC0001.zip.html with different options from Settings > Metadata > IPTC & XMP enabled and disabled to see if they actually have any effect.

I might have misunderstood meaning of options in Settings > Metadata > IPTC & XMP for instance "export rating in XMP metadata", i thought it means "write rating to sidecar .xmp file" and probably actual meaning of this option is "write rating to XMP metadata fields that is written either to image itself or .xmp sidecar" and all options related to creating sidecar .xmp files is on tab Settings > Metadata > Sidecar?

When i tag image inside XnViewMP and close the program then reopen it again file is still tagged, how does XnViewMP remember that file is tagged, where it saves that information?

Yes, 'XMP metadata' can be embedded or sidecar

Sorry but i'm wrong, currently tagged files is stored in catalog. But why do you want export it state with 'Update files from catalog'? It's not a metadata entry

I need ability to only save metadata to catalog when using IPTC & XMP dialog window's instead of writing to file / sidecar. Then once i have tagged all my thousands of files i select them and press "Update files from catalog" and go sleep while XnViewMP created sidecars or writes metadata to all image files for many hours.

Otherwise if i select 100 files that i want to add metadata for, say Country = Thailand then click Write and have to wait for while before XnViewMP finish to write files before i can continue to add metadata for next group of files. Too much interruptions in the workflow.

I understand. But full XMP metadata is not written in catalog. Only rating/color labels/categories. 'Update files from catalog' update only these fields.

Creating sidecar should not be long...

Also i noticed bug with "Edit XMP" in v1.6.0. After pressing Write and sidecar .xmp file is created, image thumbnail disappears from the thumbnail view of XnViewMP and refreshing thumbnail view does not bring it back. Only navigating away from folder and coming back shows missing thumbnail again.

That's a major slowdown every RAW is 20MB re-writting 100 raw's takes quite a bit of time.

Other software (Photo Mechanic) that write IPTC tags offers option to either write IPTC inside actual raw or create sidecar .xmp.

I believe its part of IPTC standard to have either tags in .xmp sidecar or written to raw itself, whatever option user like's more. This is very nice to have a choice as some people are extra careful and don't wish to modify the raw image file itself.

Yes in 1.6.1 as well, thumbnail still disappears after pressing Write button .

I thought that If i use other image viewer such as ACDSee or lightroom it won't show XMP fields, only IPTC. However i need to test that.

All modern apps use XMP and no more IPTC metadatas

Yes in 1.6.1 as well, thumbnail still disappears after pressing Write button .

I can't reproduce. It's the thumbnail of .arw which disappear? Even with F5 the file is not visible? Could you post a screenshot of 'Settings>File list>Companion files?'

Yes, its .arw file related, and F5 does not bring it back, only when navigating out of folder and coming back.

I can't reproduce, could you send me your xnview.ini, and describe the way to reproduce?
