Random crashes when playing MP4 video in separate tab and going to next file on 1.6.2 (Windows, x64)

Post by Sethur »

Description
Switching to the next file (can be a picture or video) during playback of an MP4 video, XnView MP 1.6.2. randomly freezes and needs to be force closed. Sometimes the freeze happens right away 5 times in a row, sometimes it takes a few minutes to reproduce.

The videos where the freezes happen are inside an MP4 container and have the following video and audio encodings:
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1920x1080 30fps 20029kbps [V: VideoHandle [eng] (h264 high L4.0, yuv420p, 1920x1080, 20029 kb/s)]
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo 96kbps [A: SoundHandle [eng] (aac lc, 48000 Hz, stereo, 96 kb/s)]

Steps to reproduce
  1. Use internal browser to go to a folder containing both JPGs and MP4s
  2. Open up a few images and videos in separate tabs
  3. Start playback of MP4 video in separate tab
  4. Without stopping playback, go to the next/prev picture by using the mouse wheel or pressing page up/down
  5. If done for a while, especially when skipping inside the video and then immediately going to the next file, XnView freezes.
Environment
Version: 1.6.2 64-bit (Windows)
OS: Windows 10, x64

Same here.

Usually I can browser pictures in the viewer for longer. But whenever I reach video files, there is a chance for Xnview to freeze and crash. If I should guess, the chance is like around 20%-30% maybe for this to happen. Not sure about the exact requirements for this bug.

I dont think so. I cant remember when I updated to v1.6.2. Maybe I had 1.6.0 for longer and then skipped 1.6.1 (so, not sure if my previous version was 1.6.0 oder 1.6.1). But yeah, in previous version i had none of these issues.

I am also 99% sure that this did not happen with previous versions. I got your PM and will report back.

I also just found that selecting different videos (JPGs as well) in the browser (with a single click) when the ExifTool info tab is open produces a noticeable and quite annoying delay, I'd say about 0.5 - 1.0 seconds. I can't imagine that the metadata access of the ExifTool API is that slow, but if it is, the info should probably be queried asynchronously.

@pierre: The beta version you sent me seems to have fixed this issue, at least I had no more crashes for quite a long time.

Thank you for your efforts to fix this so quickly.

EDIT: Unfortunately, I just had a new crash with 1.6.3. However, this version still seems to be more stable.

Hi!
Exactly the same error after updating the version.
I have MacOs Big Sur (11.7.10).
Maybe your beta version will fix my situation? :)

I'm sorry. I can't find the 1.6.3 package on the website.
Unfortunately I only see 1.6.2.

Thanks for the link and your tremendous hard work.
I reinstalled version 1.6.3 but there is no change - video files are not enabled and are pending. The program hangs at this point and it can only be forcibly restarted.

Could you describe the way to reproduce

Yes, of course.
Suppose you have JPG files and MOV files in the same folder.
Viewing the JPG files is no problem - I can see them as thumbnails in the shared folder, but I can also open them full screen. Scrolling is also available.
But if I open a video file in full screen and try to launch it, the "waiting" symbol appears and the program hangs. The only way to bring it back to life is a forced reboot.
Before the program update, video files played without problems.
I repeat - I have MacOs Big Sur (11.7.10).

Same with mp4?

I can only try on 14.1, and no probleme here

Pierre.
