Copy image to a new folder creates duplicate in Catagroies

I like to copy images I like to other folders. Doing this keeps the meta data like categories and ratings. The problem arises when clicking a category and seeing duplicate files. Is there a way around this? Maybe a setting that when you copy an image it clears all the metadata? I cant really exclude folders because I have so many folders with to many original and copied files, its a mess. Any help would be appreciated.
