IPTC is not displayed
XNView MP 1.7.2 doesn't display IPTC Infos for every Image. I can see them in ACDSee or ThumbsPlus. But not in XNView MP. See attached images. How can I change this?
Re: IPTC is not displayed
Pierre, thanks for your answer. It is unfortunate that this distinction is made. Users of image editing or photo processing programs are not interested in the different methods of entering metadata into individual files. If they use different programs for IPTC entries, for example ACDSee, Photoshop, FotoStation and DxO Photolab, they want the entries to appear the same in all programs, regardless of how they are embedded.
If XN View offers two different editors, which in the end give the impression that some images don’t contain IPTC-Infos, this can lead to devastating misunderstandings. You cannot see the photo's IPTC entries even with XNShell. Can't this be changed? ACDSee and ThumbsPlus do not make this distinction, at least not outwardly. This should also be possible with XN View.

IPTC is the old metadata, now all apps use XMP metadata (which has IPTC extension). Some users want to modify IPTC and not XMP

Re: IPTC is not displayed
I scanned my first images in 1995 and produce digital images since then. I inserted IPTC Infos since 1998. In 2008 I used FotoStation to convert old IPTC to a newer code. With ACDSee, Photoshop ThumbsPlus 10 and FotoStation all kinds of IPTC Infos are presented equally and can be edited with the same editors.
If every few years my work of writing a lot of captions will be devalued from updated software, because software-makers dismisse older ways, this seems very wrong to me. The IPTC Infos, no matter if they are IPTC-MII oder Dublin Core or XMP, should appear to the user and be editited equally.
It's a shame that XNView handles this differently. Can't this be changed?

I have users that don't want XMP but only IPTC. What's the problem if you use 'Edit XMP' instead of 'Edit IPTC'?toga wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 10:05 pm It's a shame that XNView handles this differently. Can't this be changed?

Re: IPTC is not displayed
In the above image, the IPTC editor of XNShell also shows empty windows. They give the impression that there are no IPTC entries in the image. From the photographer's point of view, it should not matter whether they are embedded as XMP or in another form. Most know anything about that.
They simply want to see what is entered there and possibly edit the text. But if none is visible, it gives the impression that there is none at all. And that is wrong.
Is it really so difficult to insert an 'if/then' function for two identical-looking forms? If that can’t be done, it would at least be good to integrate a converter that converts older IPTC forms to IPTC in XMP or whatever to bring embedded descriptions in all images to the contemporary standard. I know that this can be done with Excel tools, but that is a matter for specialists with good IT skills. Most photographers or employees in small archives would not know this or do something like that.
Dealing with such technical details is something for IT specialists. It is not user-friendly for people who concentrate on labeling their pictures. With both DigiKam and XN View, I get the impression that the programs expect too much from the users in this regard.
