Version 1.7.2 can display video clips in .avi format. Version 1.8.0 cannot.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

The attached screen dumps show XnView MP and XnView Classic (latest versions, installed today!), both with the same file selected.
Classic can show the first image of the .AVI file, MP cannot. Classic can run the video in the preview pane, MP cannot.

Neither of them can show .MP4 files in the browser.

Wanted to attach the .AVI file in the example, but I get the error message "Invalid file extension: 2024-05-03_01-47-36.AVI".

File up to 2MiB can be attached if placed in a ZIP, for larger files a download link is usually best, provided it will remain valid for long enough for Pierre to find it.

It is possible that in your case it is either the MS AVI V2 format or the file is damaged when encoding. Try to open it using the MediaInfo V24.12 utility (it currently gives the maximum data volume) and copy its text report here and we will all see what you met together.

I just discovered than XnView has an option in the settings to display thumnails for video files, which by defautl is switched off!!!

Which moron made that the default setting? And why hasn't anybody from the bug handling team mentioned it?

For the benefit of anybody else who might be reading this and has the same problem:
Go to Settings - File list - Custom filter and activate "Show as thumbnail" for Video.

This bug report can be closed.
