Shortcuts - bindings - add separate shortcuts functionality

Post by user0 »

XnViewMP 1.8.3
Windows11 (24H2), display resolution 3840x2160, dpi scale 150%

Shortcuts - bindings
its not possible to bind few separate keys (combinations) to the same command, which is inconvenient

Suggestion

  • add separate shortcuts functionality
so multiple separate shortcuts can be assigned to the same command, eg for tabs and navigation
  • (optional) remove sequential shortcuts functionality
    as its usefulness is questionable

While the system should definitely allow binding an arbitray number of shortcuts to a single command, removing sequential ones would be a huge mistake as they offer the most ergonomic way to group/use keybinds as they allow you to avoid the inconvenient hold of far away modifiers and instead type the most conveniently located keys and do it in a "regular typing" fashion.
For example, there are various "hide toolbar" commands (status bar, toolbar, filelist toolbar,...)
You can bind them to the most conveniently located home row keys A, S, D, F, G with a simple single prefix H (also conveniently located, and you can think of H as "hide")

There is no way to use A otherwise, it's too convenient to use for something more useful with modifiers (eg you'd rather use Ctrl+A to select all), you'd need to use more modifiers otherwise, which is not only harder to press, but also harder to remember (was it Ctrl+Shift+Alt+A or Ctrl+Shift+A?).

With H+A and H+S etc you know it's Hide + Something
