XviD 1.1.0 Final

Post by ckit »

XviD 1.1 Final - Opensource Freeware:

Changelog:
- {core}: Field interlaced decoding.
- {dshow}: Additional fourcc support.
- {vfw}: Small updates.

Finally, the 1.1.0-release is ready for prime-time!
Only small fixes and changes were done compared to beta 2, but you might like the (a little bit) overhauled vfw-front-end.

DivX Create 6.2 (Trial) and DivX Play 6.2 (Freeware):

New:

* A new encoder preset option allows you to quickly configure the encoder based upon your preference for encoding speed and video quality
* The DivX community codec replaces the current free version of DivX, offering a wider range of performance and quality options for free through encoder presets
* Multithreaded resize filters have been added for improved performance on all HyperThreaded (HT), dual CPU (SMP) and dual core processors
* A new "Enhanced multithreading" option capable of increasing encoding rate depending on system configuration and encoding environment
* A new "Enhance texture" psychovisual enhancement method that improves picture details around keyframes and reduces the appearance of stray blocks under fast motion when encoding at lower bitrates
* MMX optimizations for the MPEG quantization method
* The DivX decoder can anonymously check for updates to the DivX codec, ensuring you are always notified of newer versions. For more information, and to enable notifications for future beta releases, click here.

Fixed:

* Fixed a problem where multiple instances of the feedback window would cause the encoder to fail
* Fixed a problem where very old DivX 5.0 content might not be decoded correctly
* The encoder GUI now adapts to screen resolutions of 800x600 or lower

Changed:

* Bitrate modulation for multipass nth pass encoding is now preset at an optimal value for quality, and this option removed from the user interface.
* The DivX Pro 6 month trial has been replaced by a 15 day trial, which can be started from the DivX encoder GUI, rather than during installation. This is because a much wider range of features are now available for free in the community codec. Previously installed 6 month trials will be honored.

DivX and PX Hell

Post by ckit »

Starting at DivX v6.1 and higher includes the "evil" prassi px burning engine which can play hell with your optical drives!

Here's how to fix the BS...

Open RegEdit at this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
remove the LowerFilters = Pxhelp20

Now reboot!

Not necessary but you can also remove all the PX*.* files from %windir%\system32 folder too.

PS. You can avoid the PX burning engine being installed by NOT installing the DivX Player and DivX Web Player!

Thanks for this tip! Why does a video player install CD burning files?

No, if I do any encoding I'll use XviD 1.1.2.

Ahhhh... Thanks for confirming. I thought one moment I was an old and outdated geek-wanabee...
By the way, did you try X264? (I was impressed by the compression efficiency. Hardware support should improve steadily too...)

Hardware support is already coming fast, but it's often known as Bluray and HD-DVD. =p

(You can encode in ffdshow, but even though I maintain the project, I would never recommend it except as a last resort. Now x264, I can't recommend enough...)

X264 is CLI only and therefore complete and utter garbage.
Notice that support for encoding X264 was removed from FFDShow too, says alot I think.

XviD 1.2 (VFW) is the future although I'll stick with v1.1.2 for now.

If you really have to get your vfw love on: current vfw x264.

The only reason we chose to remove x264 from ffdshow was because it was getting very outdated (about a hundred revs behind), it wasn't going to be easy to update (having been customized to fit in), and because a vfw version already existed (although it wasn't up-to-date at the time). The discussion was here.

No ffdshow developer looks down on x264 as a project or codec.
