Category groups (assigned) are not updated
I wanted to reorganize my keywords, so I removed all metadata from the relevant images using batch processing. Unfortunately, after this process there are still remnants of keywords. I have removed these few manually, even though it is annoying. The real problem, however, is that keywords can still be found under “Assigned” (german "Zugeordnet"), which should not be the case because they are no longer present in the metadata.
I manage preview images of 3D meshes and have the keywords saved next to the file as an XMP sidecar.
XnView MP 1.8.3 64-bit Windows - Libformat 7.196 -- Date: Nov 12 2024
The main folder that xnview uses is mounted as a junction as I have used it before with digicam which has not caused any problems so far, I mention it just in case.

edit (1): as expected, the XMP sidecars also contain no keyword data only the ui is not refreshing
edit (2): I have just realized that I cannot manually remove the incorrectly displayed keywords. If I add a new one, I can remove it manually.
edit (3): Somehow data (keywords) seem to remain in the single image file ? When I convert an image from JPG to PNG and vice versa, the keyword data disappears and the category “Assignment” seems to work.
edit (4): video that illustrates the problem https://youtu.be/UEuDQRtTuMI

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
So if i understand correctly, the files have always keywords in their metadatas?

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
No, the metadata in the XMP sidecar files are empty as far as keywords are concerned. They only contain the empty body that is created when you use batch processing to delete all metas.
XnView MP shows under “Assigned” old data that no longer exists. For the re-sorting the xmp sidecars were removed and to be on the safe side I deleted the metas in the image itself.
I cannot remove these entries manually either.
Current workaround: I convert all images folder by folder from JPG to PNG; delete the JPG; convert the PNG back to JPG; delete the PNG. Result: I can assign new keywords and also remove them manually under “Assigned” if necessary. The display also shows what is really there.

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
So i think that you have the categories stored in catalog, if you try 'Update catalog from files'?

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
Yes, I have saved the categories in a catalog. The catalog is of no use to me because, as I said, I want to start from scratch, which means the catalog is empty, at least in terms of keywords (categories) or already has some of the new categories. However, the import function was the first thing I tried before starting again.
This does not explain where the categories come from that do not actually exist - neither in the new catalog, nor in the respective image file and also not in the respective xmp sidecar.

when you browse your folders, files metadata is imported into catalogDaimonicon wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 3:58 pm This does not explain where the categories come from that do not actually exist - neither in the new catalog, nor in the respective image file and also not in the respective xmp sidecar.

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
I was sure that only the data from the XMP sidecars would be loaded with the settings made (see image link). I have tested the option marked in blue both on and off. Screenshot https://prnt.sc/FjAXSwkhp8tc
XMP Sidecar of faulty image https://prnt.sc/ZnJqCevHjeHT
categories (keywords) https://prnt.sc/IBaStCrc_hM8
Wherever this data strangely comes from doesn't explain why I can't simply remove these faulty categories as I can with new images. So why I have to recreate the images as a workaround by converting them ?
This was clear to me regardless of the settings mentioned above - but there is no metadata available!xnview wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2025 1:23 pm when you browse your folders, files metadata is imported into catalog

I have also created a video that illustrates the problem more simply.

Ok, and if you copy (with windows explorer) the files from faulty folder in another folder, same problem?Daimonicon wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2025 1:50 pm I have also created a video that illustrates the problem more simply.

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
I tried it with a single affected folder. In this case the behavior and the display is correct - no categories appear under “Assigned” I can add and remove new ones.xnview wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2025 7:52 am Ok, and if you copy (with windows explorer) the files from faulty folder in another folder, same problem?
How can the storage location be the problem ? So I have already newly entered 50% of the data (2500/5500 items) in this time with the mentioned workaround - Therefore it would be difficult to impossible to simply move everything I think.

Is it possible to send me the xnview.db?Daimonicon wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2025 8:13 am How can the storage location be the problem ? Yes, I think so - should I store them in the cloud for download, for example, or send them by e-mail?

Re: Category groups (assigned) are not updated
I have just completed 100% of the new data capture. From what I can see xnview no longer has any corrupt image files. However, I have noticed that xnview still exports categories that no longer exist when exporting a catalog.
None of the categories should exist anymore except “skyrim” they do not appear in xnview nor in the image metadata
I didn't want to open a new problem, but maybe the whole thing is connected?
