.jp_ files
I have some .jpg files that look terrible as thumbnails, they even have a blue symbol that looks like a blue square with a smaller white square in the corner. When I use Metadata/Clean on them it creates a .jp_ file but leaves the original file.
Can anyone explain why xnview is creating new files instead of just fixing the .jpg file? I want to delete the ugly .jpg file and keep the nicer .jp_ but xnview says the .jpg file is larger (so I assume the picture is better, even though I can't see a difference) and I don't know what a .jp_ file is. For all I know it's some weird file that might not be compatable with other programs and may end up corrupted and useless.
When I ask duckduckgo what .jp_files are I just get answers on how to open them. But one site said something about them being compressed files but not much else.

Use Google, Luke
----------------------------------------
Opening JP_ Files
The JP_ file type is primarily associated with Web browsers, Download managers.
File Extension JP_
File extension: JP_
File type: Partially downloaded image
What is a JP_ file?
JP_ files mostly belong to Web browsers, Download managers. A .JP_ file is an incomplete or partially downloaded JPEG image file. It typically occurs when the download process of a JPEG image is interrupted. The file may not be viewable in image viewers until the download is complete and the file extension is renamed to .jpg or .jpeg. While the .JP_ extension signifies an incomplete download, the internal structure remains consistent with the JPEG standard, allowing for potential recovery or resumption of the download in some cases.
How can I open a JP_ file?
You need a suitable software like Web browsers, Download managers to open a JP_ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JP_ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JP_ file directly in the browser. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Re: .jp_ files
So why is xnview making these files out of .jpg files? Why isn't xnview fixing the .jpg files? They appear in the thumbnails horribly pixelated so I clean them under metadata but instead of fixing the picture, like it usually does, it just makes a copy of the picture as a .jp_ file.
Re: .jp_ files
backup files will be created ("_original" added to original extension) for some operations (eg changing GPS)
☑ Make backup for other lossless operations (Settings > General > File operations)
other option - you have some traces from older versions in you xnview.ini
clean installation of latest version should help

Re: .jp_ files
I have had trouble with multiple versions of Xnview. First I used the installed version, then I switched to the stand alone zip, then I had trouble updating the zip so I went back to the installed version which apparently was still on my computer. I also lost some picture ratings because of that. Whole folders of pictures I gave ratings to did not keep those ratings when I switched to the installed version.
Your saying I should uninstall then reinstall the regular version? If I make a copy of everything in my C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\XnViewMP folder my xnview will still be the same, just more stable and up to date correct? I won't lose my settings, ratings, or anything?
Sorry to ask a question that should seem obvious but I'm worried there is something I'm not predicting (like when I went back to the installed version) and if I don't get a go ahead I might lose something.

Re: .jp_ files
backup
- check where app stores its settings/db:
Settings > Integration > Paths
- backup whatever you may need:
XnView.db - tags, rating, color labels, categories, albums
Thumb.db - cached thumbnails
xnview.ini - app settings
bookmark.ini - favorites
default.bar - toolbar
default.keys - shortcuts
+ few files for presets
- delete old versions
- uninstall OR delete app folder
- delete settings/db files if you kept them not in the app folder
- install new one OR unzip to wherever you want
- on the first run app will check default locations for xnview.ini, if not found - it shows Startup Wizzard
- register app in the system, press 'Set file association...' in Settings >Integration
- associate image files via OS setting
- to update app
- do backup
- install new version OR unzip into app folder with overwrite

Re: .jp_ files
Well the program isn't making .jp_ files anymore, and metadata/clean does remove most of the blue symbols (the symbols that are usually associated with blurry thumbnails) on the pictures (it still leaves behind that blue box with a smaller white box in the bottom right corner symbol) but it's not actually improving the thumbnail. The thumbnail is still really blurry, and the symbols if I go to another folder.
By the way, I just downloaded version 1.8.6 setup for windows. Also the clean feature under metadata does work for other pictures, just not the pictures in this particular folder for some reason. But at least before the .jp_files at least looked nice as thumbnails, even if they were smaller in byte size.

Re: .jp_ files
overlay icon you are talking about means image has "embedded thumbnail", you can
- rebuild/remove it OR
- setup app to use it selectively or do not use at all in Settings
XnViewMP - thumbnails - understanding quality/size

Re: .jp_ files
-Rebuilding thumbnails doesn't fix the blurry thumbnail. I also tried Metadata/EXIF Thumbnail/EXIF Thumbnail - Rebuild but that didn't work.
-When you say remove the thumbnail are you saying I can remove the thumbnail, keep the picture, then re-add the picture to Xnview and it will be good? I'm not certain how to do that.
-What apps might fix it?

Re: .jp_ files
depends on your Thumbnail caching settings
- ☑ Thumbnail caching (default)
1. go to Settings > Catalog
- press 'Get thumbnail size' button to increase cached size to match rendering size
- press 'Rebuild thumbnails' button
2. reopen Browser tab or restart app
- ☐ Thumbnail caching
1. go to Settings > Thumbnail
- check 'Create from original image if embedded thumbnail is smaller than thumbnail [rendering] size'
- press OK
OR
1. delete embedded thumbnails (JPEG only)
- select files
- select EXIF Thumbnail in Browser > Metadata > Clean..
- press OK
