In XnView MP or XnView Classic?

XnView MP is the newer and now preferred software.

Step 1 Be careful and use backups. Test on a small number of photos. Work on duplicates.
Step 2 Rename
(XnViewMP : )
Step 3 Tools > Batch conversion > Actions > Add > Text > Use arrow to choose {filename} or any other field.
it's also possible to add a blank area under the photos to add this caption out of the photo area.
There are many options to set in batch conversion ...

Instead of renaming, I would have used Metadata > Edit xmp , and defined a title or description, then used this metadata to add the text to the photos.
This way, it's easy to modify something by changing the title and writing the updated text on the original version of the photo.

If I understand your need correctly you can:

1. Change the filename of each file individually using, for example, the F2 key;

2. Write the new filename onto the image, either directly on the image or on new image canvas, for example, below the existing image.

Step 2 can probably be performed automatically on the renamed files, using a series of batch processing steps.
