Font size for high resolution screens

Post by BugFix »

Hi Folks,

I wanted to try out the program, but it's almost impossible for me to use it. The font size is so tiny on both of my monitors that I need a magnifying glass. It doesn't make sense to change the DPI of the monitors so that I can see the font better, and I don't have any other programs (Adobe PS, Lightroom DxO, etc.) where I have this problem. In my opinion, this should be solved responsively.

Monitor 1: 29" 2560x1440px
Monitor 2: 32" 3480x2160px

Funnily enough, the menus or the font in the directory tree are somewhat okay, but the settings menu, or any kind of labeling in the program, is much, much too small.

Even if I set the scaling to 125%, it's still too small; at 150%, it's okay, but then all the other elements become huge.

Thanks a lot for providing such a programm and all the effort spent
Best regards :)

Unfortunately not. I tried to show this in the attachment: XN-MP in the background, the settings on the left, and a section of Windows Explorer on the right for comparison of sizes. Many fonts in XN are only half the size or smaller than the parent font, whereas in Windows Explorer even the font in the pop-ups that appear when you hover over them with the mouse retains the same font size.

as I wrote before:

Monitor 1: 29" 2560x1440px
Monitor 2: 32" 3480x2160px

the problem is the same on both

scaling 100%

I also wrote: "Even if I set the scaling to 125%, it's still too small; at 150%, it's okay, but then all the other elements become huge."

“huge” means that all fonts are enlarged when scaled >100%, making the folder tree and other elements unusably large

what you mean with this-> " no change in compatibility for XnView?"

Yes, the same,

additionally XN does not open automatically on the active screen when disconnecting one monitor (plug off or switch off, same behave) I had to activate the second monitor open XN move it by hand to the next monitor, close it, disconnect the monitor again, open XN again. Other programs "jump" automatically to the active screen, when disconnecting (when open or when opening after disconnect)

It is really hard to get what you mean when you answer cryptic, if you mean compatibility mode for XN then I answer no, should I?

Yes, the same,
Strange, i can't reproduce on a 3840x2400 monitor (win11), using 100% or 200%

I dont have this issue with XnView Classic, even when some of the fonts are smaller than the main font, also some icons (icon row above the thumbnails) are smaller but not with such impact.

worse
here as a normal start from start menu button click:

and here started from CMD with argument -noDpiScaling:

as you can see the difference (size ratio) between font sizes is raising, -noDpiScaling makes it less favorable, it also creates empty lines between exif entries

this affects to many parts in the application, not only the shown fragment

Passing by…

As my post references: viewtopic.php?t=50073

I can barely see the tags even at 1920x1080 Traditional Chinese resolution; I can't even imagine how much worse it would be at higher resolutions.

Traditional Chinese is, of course, even harder than my problem. It would be good if XN offered the option to adjust the font size in the UI.

When comparing your screenshots with mine, it seems as if the font size ratio increases along with the resolution, thereby reducing the font size of the submenus... This could be related to the fact that the largest font is fixed or linked to the one that Windows uses for menus ?

Hi Pierre, restarting after DPI scaling makes no difference to me. I've been using the program (more or less daily) since my first post (or a day or two before) and have already restarted and changed it several times for testing purposes...

At the moment, I'm using it with 125% scaling and my very best glasses because it already has some advantages over other viewers :) But the scaling makes the font quite blurry, and I probably had to reset ClearType every time.
