I've been a user of XnView for many years, although not for a year or so due to health reasons. I'm now back organising my scans of a few thousand slides.
So the first thing to do was update to the latest version of the Classic version.
I am using two instances to compare the contents of different folders.
I am now seeing that the second instance is hanging, while the first instance is still working.
The only solution is to restart Windows 11.

When I bought this PC, I installed both the standard and MP, but continued to use the standard version not wanting to spend time on learning the changes.
So as suggested I'm now using MP and the hanging has stopped.
But for MP, I did not recently update, so the update could be the problem. Using V-1.9.3 64-bit.
