Remove Green 'Back' button on Browser window?

Post by Scanner Bob »

I've read and clicked on any and all likely settings in 'Settings', but there's nothing that controls that infuriating and redundant and unnecessary 'Back' button in the browser window. It's taking up one entire spot for a thumbnail when there's already a back button right above it on the tool bar.
Thanks bunches folks!

Welcome to the forums.

Yes, that can easily be fixed.

But "Infuriating and redundant and unnecessary"? Maybe try to dial back your ire, when asking for help. All these options exist to cater to people with different preferences. You evidently don't like that one, but others do. You'll find XnViewMP has a LOT of options. It's very configurable, which makes it suitable to a lot of different people. I think that's a good thing. :)

You are seeing that for two reasons.

1. You have selected the "Custom" filter in the browser. If you had selected literally ANY other view/filter (like Images + Folders, for example) you would not see it.

2. You also have it enabled in the Custom filter settings. Since you didn't find it, evidently your search of the settings was not as thorough as you thought.

To change it:
Go to Tools->Settings:File List:Custom filter and UNcheck the "Parent folder" item. Click OK. Problem solved.

Or change from the Custom Filter to something else. If you're using the Custom Filter intentionally (some people accidentally enable it) then you must have gone in there to configure it according to your intentions, in which case you saw the "Parent Folder" setting. I would have thought you'd have clicked on what you call "the back button" and seen what it does (takes you up a level to the parent folder), but I guess you didn't see the connection between the two.

If you ever tried a different View/Filter setting you'll have noticed that the parent/../up folder disappeared.

Some people like seeing the parent folder (the .. folder) be listed just like the other folders as big thumbnails, because it makes sense to them and it's easier for them to navigate. But whether you see the parent folder, or any folders at all as thumbnails, is configurable. Personally I don't see any folders like that; I show images only, and the folders stay in the tree.

Like I said, the app has a lot of options, and sadly most of it is undocumented, so it's easy to get lost or not be able to figure out how something gets changed. It happens to everybody when they're getting started with the program. :)

Hopefully this helps...
